How to Clean Your Barrel: A Step-by-Step Guide for Home Barrel Owners

At Liquid Luxury, your barrel is your trusty sidekick in crafting the perfect blend. Cleaning isn’t needed unless you notice off flavours like bandaid, nail polish, or mould. If it’s working well, no need to interfere. But if something's off, here’s how to clean it.

Step 1: Drain the Barrel

Start by draining any remaining wine from your barrel. A clean, dry workspace is a must, so place your barrel on a stand or stable surface where it can be safely handled. It’s important to remove as much wine as possible before moving on to the next steps. (Pro tip: Collect any remaining wine in a container or bottles—you don’t want to waste a drop, and you can put it back in once clean)

Step 2: The Hot Water Wash

This is the hero of your barrel cleaning routine. The hot water wash helps to remove any residual wine or microbial buildup while hydrating the staves.

  • Fill with hot water: Use filtered water heated to 60 - 80°C. Avoid boiling water, as it can damage the wood.

  • Swirl and soak: Pour the hot water into the barrel and gently swirl it around to make sure the inside is fully coated. Then, let it sit for 20–30 minutes. The hot water will loosen up any leftover wine and debris from the barrel’s interior.

  • Rinse and repeat: Empty the barrel and inspect the water. If it’s cloudy or full of sediment, repeat the hot water wash until the water runs clear. This might take a couple of cycles, but it’s worth it to keep your barrel in top condition.

Step 3: Inspect for Leaks

While the barrel is still warm and moist, take a moment to inspect it for leaks. Hot water can sometimes expose areas where the staves might need tightening. If you spot any leaks, you can gently tap the hoops back into place or consult a cooper for repairs. We've also got a some more information for leaking barrels here.

Step 4: Air-Dry the Barrel

Once you’ve finished the hot water wash and are satisfied that your barrel is sparkling clean, it’s time to let it air-dry. Turn the barrel upside down on a clean, elevated surface and allow it to dry completely. Proper air circulation is key here—don’t rush the process. Leave the bung hole open to prevent any unwanted pressure buildup. Allow it to dry for up to 48 hours but not too much longer.

Step 5: Sulphur Treatment (Optional)

Prepare a sanitising solution using citric acid (3g/L) and potassium metabisulphite (3g/L). Dissolve the recommended amounts in room temperature water and fill the barrel. Let it soak for several hours before draining and rinsing with clean water. Do not use hot water without proper PPE, as it creates toxic fumes and should be done in a well-ventilated area. If you won’t be refilling the barrel immediately, you can leave the sulphur treatment in the barrel for a several weeks before rinsing with clean hot water and then refilling with your wine.

Step 6: Refill or Rest

With your barrel clean and dry, you’re now ready to refill it with your wine.

And there you have it! With these steps, you’ll keep your barrel in pristine condition, ready to continue crafting your masterpiece. Remember, a clean barrel is the foundation of great wine, and now you're armed with the know-how to care for yours like a true winemaking pro!
